캐나다 작가 피터 와츠 peter watts의 블라인드사이트 blindsight. 2082년 반디불이 우주에서 쏟아진다. 자잘한 별똥별이 잔뜩. 무엇 때문일까? 마치 지구 위의 샅샅히 사진찍듯.
그리고 태양계 가장자리에서 뭔가가 관측된다. 테세우스 theseus호는 그리로 날아간다. 인위적으로 만들어진 다중인격 언어학자 수잔 제임스 susan james, 실험장비와 감지장치로 범벅이 된 생물학자 아이작 스핀델 isaac szpindel, 평화주의 전사 아만다 베이츠 amada bates 소령, 합성자 syntheist로 불리는 위상심리학자 시리 키튼 siri keeton, 통솔자는 흡혈귀 주카 사라스티 jukka sarasti.
샌프란시스코 영화협회 sffs에서 밀양 密陽 secret sunshine을 소개했다. 조지 루카스 george lucas가 세운 레터맨 디지털 아트센터에서 행사가 열렸는데, 저녁에 처음 가니 찾기가 쉽지는 않더라. 일찍 간 핑계로 좀 헤매고 들어가니 근사한 건물, 세심하게 신경을 쓴 티가 났다. 영화관은 샌프란시스코 현대미술관 sfmoma보다 좀 작은 것 같은데, 시설은 훌륭했다. 방음도 잘 되었고, 불이 꺼지고 화면이 밝아지기까지 깜깜한 기분 🙂

The New York Film Festival wrote that “Secret Sunshine is that rare movie that possesses the richness and complexity of a great novel, revealing new layers as it unfolds. A recent widow (Jeon Do-Yeon) and her young son adjust to life in a small country town after relocating from Seoul. Then, abruptly and without warning, the film shifts into thriller territory, only to end as a devastating study in human suffering (albeit one with dark comic overtones). Lee Chang-Dong navigates his switchblade reversals of comedy and despair, darkness and light with a master’s grace, as does Jeon in a revelatory performance for which she won the Best Actress prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.” Lee Chang-Dong, who will be in attendance, is an SF International Film Festival veteran, screening Peppermint Candy in 2001 and Green Fish in 1998. 구글에서 였던가, 게임즈-스탁 games-stock.com에서 쉽사리 찾을 수 없던 것을 찾았다. 재고가 있다는 확인을 하고 나서 주문을 했다.
여행에 이래저래 엇갈려서 뒤늦게 우편물을 보니 뭔가 이상하다. 원래 포장도 아니고, 시커먼 플라스틱 상자에 수상한 카트리지에 스티커가 엉성하게 붙어있지 않은가. 메일을 보내봤다.

역사적 사건이 다르게 펼쳐졌다면 하는게 대체역사 alternate history. 우리의 현재 말고도 다른 갈래가 존재한다는게 평행우주 parallel universe다, 뭐 대충. 과거와 미래를 오가며 피드백에 의한 인과를 얘기하는 시간여행은 말고, 역사가 다르게 펼쳐진 평행우주가 상업왕족 시리즈의 배경이다.
중세의 권력싸움, 근대의 불평등, 상이한 예법과 관습. 현대 기업사회의 알력과 음모, 범죄집단의 뻔뻔함과 新냉전의 첩보와 무기까지. 핵대처팀 nirt(nuclear incident response team), madm(medium atomic demolition munition)에서 만들어 낸 것 같은 fadm. 스트로스는 경찰조직과 첩보조직에도 박식하다. 모호한 암호들이 난무하는데, greensleeves, clancy, jaunt blue ;), coldplay :p
4권까지 왔으니 스포일러 특집, 그 간의 전개를 간추려 본다.
